Matt and Lisa Burke started their business, Farming Engineers, in 2007. The unique name came from their college mascot, The Fighting Engineers. They are very committed to and proud of the produce that they bring to their customers. Their farm, which is located in Pickard, IN, has been organic since 2007, but it became USDA Certified Organic in 2017. Matt and Lisa strongly believe in bringing delicious organic food to enable people to reconnect with the source of their food. Faming Engineers has been with the Carmel Farmers Market since 2006.
As one might imagine, every day is different on a diverse vegetable farm. Matt and Lisa make use of high tunnels in order to extend the growing season. Indoor planting begins in January and February, and the planting moves to the high tunnels and outdoors from March through October. With such an extensive array of products, there is always plenty of work to be done on a vegetable farm.
Farming Engineers has one full-time employee and 2-4 part-time employees. Devin, who you will see at the winter market, joined the team in 2013, and became the first full-time employee in 2015. Matt and Lisa are proud of the fact that they pay above a living wage for their area to their employees.
Some of the products that you will find at the market include: asparagus, basil, dill, four types of snap beans, long beans, edamame beans, beets, broccoli, carrots of every color, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts, sweet corn, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, potatoes, and plenty of great Indiana tomatoes. Every year they try a new crop or two.
